Gastrostomy uptake in motor neurone disease: a mixed-methods study of patients’ decision making by Natalie James, Emma Power, Anne Hogden, Julie Labra, Victoria M Flood

    Published 2020-02-01
“…Objectives Gastrostomy decision making is a complicated, multifaceted process for people with motor neuron disease (MND). This study explored demographic and disease-related factors that may impact on gastrostomy uptake; and reasons why people with MND accepted or declined gastrostomy, with a focus on how perceptions of swallowing and nutrition may influence decision making.Design Prospective, cross sectional, mixed methods.Setting An Australian multidisciplinary, specialty MND Service.Participants 33 patients were recommended gastrostomy by the treating medical specialist. 16 of 33 were invited to participate in the prospective decision making study; of whom 10 provided informed consent.Primary and secondary outcome measures Demographic and disease-related factors contributing to uptake are described. …”

Intraspinal Grafting of Serotonergic Neurons Modifies Expression of Genes Important for Functional Recovery in Paraplegic Rats by Krzysztof Miazga, Hanna Fabczak, Ewa Joachimiak, Małgorzata Zawadzka, Łucja Krzemień-Ojak, Marek Bekisz, Anna Bejrowska, Larry M. Jordan, Urszula Sławińska

    Published 2018-01-01
“…Moreover, the effect of intraspinal grafting of serotonergic neurons on Htr2a and Htr7 gene expression was examined to test the possibility that the graft origin 5-HT innervation in the spinal cord of paraplegic rats could reverse changes in gene expression induced by SCI. …”

NLRP3 Is Expressed in the Spiral Ganglion Neurons and Associated with Both Syndromic and Nonsyndromic Sensorineural Deafness by Penghui Chen, Longxia He, Xiuhong Pang, Xiaowen Wang, Tao Yang, Hao Wu

    Published 2016-01-01
“…Immunostaining of the mouse cochlea showed a strong expression of NLRP3 in the spiral ganglion neurons. Our results suggested that NLRP3 may have specific function in the spiral ganglion neurons and can be associated with both syndromic and nonsyndromic sensorineural deafness.…”

Deficiency of orexin receptor type 1 in dopaminergic neurons increases novelty-induced locomotion and exploration by Xing Xiao, Gagik Yeghiazaryan, Fynn Eggersmann, Anna Lena Cremer, Heiko Backes, Peter Kloppenburg, Anne Christine Hausen

    Published 2025-01-01
“…Orexin signaling in the ventral tegmental area and substantia nigra promotes locomotion and reward processing, but it is not clear whether dopaminergic neurons directly mediate these effects. We show that dopaminergic neurons in these areas mainly express orexin receptor subtype 1 (Ox1R). …”
