“…Currently,the design practice of highway bridges around the world are moving towards limit states design,a reliability-based design procedure.Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code（CHBDC）is the first design code entirely developed based on limit states design philosophy,including foundations and FRP components.However,reliability of a structure decreases in service due to environmental attacks and material deterioration such as fatigue,corrosion and many other reasons.Therefore,the structure should be inspected periodically,and the reliability of the structure should be evaluated according to its age and field data.If its reliability is reduced to a certain level,a repair should be scheduled as well as some preventive maintenance measures should be implemented to prevent further deterioration.Recently,many research works have been conducted to investigate reliability-deterioration mechanisms for each type of infrastructure and its components,optimize the inspection and maintenance strategy,predict remaining service life,estimate its life cycle cost.This paper is focused on the study of reliability-deterioration mechanisms of slab on steel girder bridges due to fatigue and corrosion of steel girders as well as corrosion of reinforcement in the deck slab.Examples will also be given to illustrate the proposed life cycle management strategy for composite slab on steel girder bridges.…”

Review and Critique of the Book of Scientific Islamic Economics Theory Building by Vaheed Moghadam

“…In this book, the author seeks to provide a way for theory building in Islamic economics by combining the teachings of Islam and the scientific method derived from the philosophy of science, but he faces two fundamental problems: Firstly, Islam, in practice, reduces to dos and don’ts, and thus its existential and epistemic propositions are prevented from playing a role in economics; secondly, by accepting experience as the evaluator and the criterion of being scientific, a proposition extends to the empiricism and its weaknesses, of course, the jurisprudential and ideological discussions of the book, especially the subject of constructions are considered as a step forward in the books of Islamic economics. To illustrate the possibility of theory building in Islamic economics, the book offers two concrete examples of this, though these two theories are more likely to be the Islamization of current economics. …”

Analysis on Elastic Parameter and Wave Velocity of Gravity Dam Foundation with Dam Height over 100 m in China by WU Maolin, HE Weiping, YAO Huiqin, YUE Mingkai, LIU Congyu

“…To illustrate the foundation conditions of gravity dams over 100 m in China and support wavefield analysis at project sites,this paper collects the foundation parameters of 68 gravity dams to analyze the statistical characteristics of elastic parameters and wave velocity.The result shows that the number of dams decreases rapidly with the height,with 3 gravity dams higher than 200 m.The distribution of gravity dams over 100 m is uneven,with a significant number in the southwest area of China.About 93% of gravity dams are with a foundation elastic modulus of 6 GPa to 28 GPa,and the average value is 16.7 GPa.The Poisson's ratios of foundations are from 0.17 to 0.32.The mass densities of foundations are from 2 000 kg/m³ to 2 900 kg/m³.In terms of wave velocities,about 96% of longitudinal wave velocities are from 1 500 m/s to 3 900 m/s,and about 95% of transverse wave velocities vary from 800 m/s to 2 300 m/s.The mean and standard deviation of longitudinal wave velocity are 2 718 m/s and 639 m/s,and those of transverse wave velocity are 1 574 m/s and 383 m/s.…”
