Youth Understanding of Healthy Eating and Obesity: A Focus Group Study by Allison C. Sylvetsky, Monique Hennink, Dawn Comeau, Jean A. Welsh, Trisha Hardy, Linda Matzigkeit, Deanne W. Swan, Stephanie M. Walsh, Miriam B. Vos

    Published 2013-01-01
“…Most youth were aware that obesity was a problem; yet most overweight youth felt that their weight was healthy and attributed overweight to genetics or slow metabolism. Conclusions. Our analysis suggests that urban youth in Georgia commonly recognize obesity as a problem, but there is less understanding of the link to lifestyle choices or the connection to future morbidities, suggesting a need for education to connect lifestyle behaviors to development of obesity.…”

Surface remodeling and inversion of cell-matrix interactions underlie community recognition and dispersal in Vibrio cholerae biofilms by Alexis Moreau, Danh T. Nguyen, Alexander J. Hinbest, Anthony Zamora, Ranjuna Weerasekera, Katherine Matej, Xuening Zhou, Sandra Sanchez, Ignacio Rodriguez Brenes, Jung-Shen Benny Tai, Carey D. Nadell, Wai-Leung Ng, Vernita Gordon, Natalia L. Komarova, Rich Olson, Ying Li, Jing Yan

    Published 2025-01-01
“…Here, we investigate cell-matrix interactions in Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of cholera. We combine genetics, microscopy, simulations, and biochemical analyses to show that V. cholerae cells are not attracted to the main matrix component (Vibrio polysaccharide, VPS), but can be attached to each other and to the VPS network through surface-associated VPS and crosslinks formed by the protein Bap1. …”
