When “Things Fall Apart”: Thinking Through Absurdity with Arendt and Aseyev by Cana Beverage

    Published 2024-10-01
“…War often occasions such moments, not just because of the moral and political turmoil that accompanies it or the physical damage it inflicts upon people and their environments, but also because of its absurdity; this latter feature, the absurdity of war, is captured by Stanislav Aseyev, a Donetsk-born Ukrainian writer, in his books In Isolation: Dispatches from Occupied Donbas and The Torture Camp on Paradise Street. In this essay, I argue that Aseyev’s reflections on Russian occupation, imprisonment, and torture demonstrate both the special value of Arendt’s “thinking” for those enduring war and violence and reveal a pre-moral-political capacity of “thinking” latent but never explicit in Arendt’s work: the power to cope with the absurd qua absurd.…”

The Power of Parody: Went With the Wind (1976), a Film Classic Revisited by The Carol Burnett Show (CBS, 1967-1978) by Taïna Tuhkunen

    Published 2020-07-01
“…Rather than downplaying the over-romanticized Southern melodrama, the sketch proceeds through further exaggerations and distortions, seeking to shatter the cult text by spoofing, mocking, while paying a humorous homage to the evergreen background text. This essay argues that despite The Carol Burnett Show’s dodging of race issues, the way it demystifies and takes down the cultural monument named “Scarlett O’Hara”—by mingling it with other generic conventions, such as slapstick comedy—sheds light on how Gone With the Wind can also work as a revelatory intertext. …”

“A Made Up Thing” Full of Depth: The Queer Belonging of Robert Duncan and New Narrative by Robin Tremblay-McGaw

    Published 2020-12-01

From Commons to Capital: The Creative Destruction of Coastal Real Estate, Environments, and Communities in the US South by Andrew W. Kahrl

    Published 2021-02-01
“…But while histories of the Sunbelt recognize the role of vacation and leisure-based development in the region’s economic transformation in the second half of the twentieth century, the social and environmental effects of coastal development remain under-examined. This essay uses a case study of Daufuskie Island, a barrier island on the South Carolina coast, to demonstrate the ties that bound capital accumulation, racial injustice, and environmental degradation together in the making of the modern South, and to call attention to the critical role of local governments in facilitating the most predatory and unsustainable features of real estate capitalism. …”

This essay examines their state-sponsored imagery, in San Marco and elsewhere, to shed light on the reasons why these three Venetian holy men were singled out as worthy of attention by their government. …”
