Spatio-Temporal Dynamics of Sediment Transport Pathways: Sand Apron Bars and Islands of Tokelau and Kiribati, Central Pacific by Eugene C. Rankey, Tion Uriam, Mika Perez

Published 2023-12-01
“…Data reveal how granular materials that make up bars and islands on reef flats respond to physical oceanographic processes via sedimentary-geomorphical change across temporal scales, from “instantaneous” impacts of cyclones or swell events to seasonal to multi-decadal shifts. Each of these shifts is manifest as migration of sediment of island beaches and bar forms, but the character varies markedly—bars form new islands, others erode and disappear; some changes are cyclic, others are directional, still others are hybrid; sediment can be transported lagoonward, oceanward, along the reef flat, or in combinations thereof; and migration rates reach up to 10 s of m/month. …”

Inorganic polyphosphate and the stringent response coordinately control cell division and cell morphology in Escherichia coli by Christopher W. Hamm, Michael J. Gray

Published 2025-02-01
“…These results provide new insights into the relationship between polyP synthesis and the stringent response in bacteria and point toward their having a joint role in controlling metabolism, cell division, and cell growth.IMPORTANCECell division is a fundamental biological process, and the mechanisms that control it in Escherichia coli have been the subject of intense research scrutiny for many decades. Similarly, both the (p)ppGpp-dependent stringent response and inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) synthesis are well-studied, evolutionarily ancient, and widely conserved pathways in diverse bacteria. …”

In silico methods for immunogenicity risk assessment and human homology screening for therapeutic antibodies by Aimee E. Mattei, Andres H. Gutierrez, Soorya Seshadri, Jacob Tivin, Matt Ardito, Amy S. Rosenberg, William D. Martin, Anne S. De Groot

Published 2024-12-01
“…Computational tools that identify T cell epitopes from primary amino acid sequences have been used to assess the immunogenic potential of therapeutic candidates for several decades. To facilitate larger scale analyses and accelerate preclinical immunogenicity risk assessment, our group developed an integrated web-based platform called ISPRI, (Immunogenicity Screening and Protein Re-engineering Interface) that provides hands-on access through a secure web-based interface for scientists working in large and mid-sized biotech companies in the US, Europe, and Japan. …”

Effects of Revised Toll-by-Weight Policy on Truck Overloading Behavior and Bridge Infrastructure Damage Using Weigh-in-Motion Data: A Comparative Study in China by Haiyun Huang, Junyong Zhou, Junping Zhang, Wangxi Xu, Zhixing Chen, Ningning Li

Published 2019-01-01
“…In an effort to ensure the structural safety and extend the service life of the highway infrastructure, the Chinese government has proposed a series of policies in the past decade to mitigate truck overloading. This study aimed at investigating the effects of China’s recently revised toll-by-weight policy on truck overloading behavior and bridge infrastructure damage using weigh-in-motion data that spanned seven years (January 2011 to March 2018) and two successive toll-by-weight policies (with the new one implemented from August 2016), wherein truck data were measured from a typical national freeway segment. …”

Mixed Signals: interpreting mixing patterns of different soil bioturbation processes through luminescence and numerical modelling by W. M. van der Meij, S. Riedesel, S. Riedesel, T. Reimann

Published 2025-01-01
“…

Luminescence, a light-sensitive mineral property, serves as a valuable tracer for long-term soil bioturbation over decadal to millennial timescales. The luminescence signal resets (bleaches) when a soil particle is exposed to daylight at the soil surface and accumulates when the particle is buried in the soil, acting as a proxy for subsurface residence times. …”
