Sepsis in Internal Medicine: blood culture-based subtypes, hospital outcomes, and predictive biomarkers
Published 2025-01-01“…C-reactive protein elevation predicted rapidly evolving culture-negative sepsis, whereas lower leukocyte counts predicted prolonged hospitalization; higher fractions of inspired oxygen predicted polymicrobial sepsis, while lactate elevation predicted ICU transfer; ferritin elevation and increased leukocyte counts predicted MDR+ sepsis, while further ferritin elevation and decreased platelet counts predicted death. From 2016 to 2023, MDR+ sepsis frequency declined, due to decreased resistance to several antibiotic classes, such as cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, and aminoglycosides; however, carbapenemase- and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Gram-negative bacteria, as well as vancomycin-resistant enterococci, increased, as did the frequency of polymicrobial sepsis following the COVID-19 outbreak.ConclusionThis work provides novel insights into sepsis management in internal medicine units, highlighting the need for validated biomarkers and implemented therapies in this scenario.…”

Scoping review of climate drivers on maternal health: current evidence and clinical implicationsAJOG Global Reports at a Glance
Published 2025-02-01“…The majority of studies (146/158; 92.4%) documented statistically significant and clinically meaningful associations between climate drivers and adverse perinatal health outcomes, including risk of preterm birth, low birthweight, and stillbirth as well as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, miscarriage, and maternal death. Among the most durable findings: extreme heat exposure in early and late pregnancy were associated with increased risk of preterm birth and stillbirth. …”

TYRO3 blockade enhances anti-PD-1 therapy response by modulating expression of CCN1 in tumor microenvironment
Published 2023-01-01“…Background Immunological contexture differs across malignancies, and understanding it in the tumor microenvironment (TME) is essential for development of new anticancer agents in order to achieve synergistic effects with anti-programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) therapy. TYRO3, AXL, and MERTK receptors are bi-expressed in both cancer and immune cells, and thus emerge as promising targets for therapeutic intervention. …”

Association between neutrophil-to-eosinophil ratio and efficacy outcomes with avelumab plus axitinib or sunitinib in patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma: post hoc analyses...
Published 2024-07-01“…Objective We report post hoc analyses of efficacy with first-line avelumab plus axitinib or sunitinib according to baseline neutrophil-to-eosinophil ratio (NER) in patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma (aRCC) from the JAVELIN Renal 101 phase 3 trial. Methods and analysis Progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS) and objective response per baseline NER were analysed in the overall population and in patients with programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1+) tumours. Multivariable Cox regression analyses to assess the effect of NER after adjustment for other baseline variables were conducted. Results In NER <median versus ≥median subgroups of the avelumab plus axitinib arm, HRs for PFS and OS were 0.81 (95% CI 0.630 to 1.035) and 0.67 (95% CI 0.481 to 0.940), and objective response rates (ORRs) were 63.9% vs 55.2%, respectively. …”
