Impact of COPD and asthma on in-hospital mortality and management of patients with heart failure in England and Wales: an observational analysis
Published 2022-06-01“…Objective To evaluate the association between having concomitant chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma, and in-patient mortality and post-discharge management among patients hospitalised for acute heart failure (HF).Setting Data were obtained from patients enrolled in the National Heart Failure Audit.Participants 217 329 patients hospitalised for HF in England–Wales between March 2012 and 2018.Outcomes In-hospital mortality, referrals to cardiology follow-up and prescriptions for HF medications were compared between patients with comorbid COPD (COPD-HF) or asthma (asthma-HF) versus HF-alone using mixed-effects logistic regression. Results Patients with COPD-HF were more likely to die during hospitalisation, and those with asthma-HF had a reduced likelihood of death, compared with patients who had HF-alone ((adjusted)ORadj, 95% CI: 1.10, 1.06 to 1.14 and ORadj, 95% CI: 0.84, 0.79 to 0.88). …”

Role of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in allergic and endotoxin-induced airway inflammation in mice
Published 2000-01-01“…Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) has recently been forwarded as a critical regulator of inflammatory conditions, and it has been hypothesized that MIF may have a role in the pathogenesis of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Hence, we examined effects of MIF immunoneutralization on the development of allergen-induced eosinophilic inflammation as well as on lipopolysaccaride (LPS)-induced neutrophilic inflammation in lungs of mice. …”

Risk factors for non-benefit of implantable cardioverter defibrillator therapy
Published 2025-01-01“…Independent risk factors for no-benefit were age ≥ 68 years (HR 4.599, p < 0.001), anemia (HR 2.549, p < 0.001), peripheral artery disease (HR 2.066, p = 0.007), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (HR 1.939, p = 0.014). Subgroup analysis by age < 68 years and ≥ 68 years demonstrated that the risk of no-benefit increases with age and comorbidities. …”

Cost–consequence analysis of COPD treatment according to NICE and GOLD recommendations compared with current clinical practice in the UK
Published 2022-06-01“…Objectives The objective of this study was to model the clinical and economic impact of adapting current clinical practice in the management of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to treatment according to national and international guideline recommendations.Design Treatment mapping was undertaken to hypothetically redistribute patients from current clinical practice, representing actual prescribing patterns in the UK, to an alternative recommendation-based treatment scenario, representing prescribing in accordance with either National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance [NG115] or Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) 2020 strategy.Setting Primary care practices in the UK (1-year time horizon).Participants Adults with COPD undergoing long-acting inhaler maintenance therapy in the UK (N=1 067,531).Interventions Inhaler maintenance therapy.Outcome measures Costs and clinical outcomes (type of treatment, rates of moderate and/or severe exacerbations, and mild-to-moderate and/or severe pneumonia events) were modelled for the two alternative pathways. Results Compared with current clinical practice, treating patients according to NICE guidance resulted in an estimated annual reduction in expenditure of £46.9 million, and an estimated annual reduction in expenditure of over £43.7 million when patients were treated according to GOLD 2020 strategy. …”
