‘Empty signifier’: The concept of ‘populism’ in the contemporary mainstream political science by L. G. Fishman

    Published 2021-07-01
“…The paper shows that this discourse emerged from the overlapping narratives of transition, modernization, free market, unlimited economic growth and ‘the end of history’ and establishes an hierarchy of global knowledge based on three principles: Western dominance, capitalism and liberalism. The author emphasizes that within this theoretical framework non-Western populism is portrayed as a relatively progressive phenomenon, as a means and an indicator of progress towards capitalism and democracy. …”

The “Heretics” Hermeneutics: Bosnia and Balkan Bogomils in the Mirror of Modern Hungarian Literature As Potential(Borrowed?) Theaters of Multidimensional Orientalism by Marton Ivanyi

    Published 2025-01-01
“…While not explicitly tied to imperial expansionist ambitions, such representations reflect European tendencies of “Othering,” where the “heretics” – often dismissed as heretics, tribal, or primitive – were situated in opposition to Western or Catholic norms. This dynamic was further complicated by Hungary’s intermediary status between Western Europe and the Balkans, creating a cultural and epistemological space that was neither fully “Orientalized” nor wholly part of the Western Occident. …”

Protein C deficiency with recurrent systemic thrombosis associated with compound heterozygous PROC missense variants by Mikio Shiba, Shuichiro Higo, Yu Morishita, Yasuhiro Ichibori, Yoshihiro Kin, Yasushi Sakata, Yoshiharu Higuchi

    Published 2025-02-01
“…PCR amplification of genomic DNA spanning these exons followed by Sanger sequencing analysis revealed that the c.76G>A and the synonymous c.423G>T variants were in the same allele, whereas the c.1000G>A variant was on the opposite allele, indicating compound heterozygosity. Western blot analysis of Huh-7 and HEK293T cells transfected with expression vectors encoding PROC with or without these variants demonstrated that Gly334Ser-PROC expression levels were significantly decreased in culture media collected from HEK293T cells, while the expression levels of protein C with these variants were not significantly altered in cell lysates. …”

Effects of Polygonatum sibiricum Polysaccharides (PSP) on Human Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma (ESCC) via NF-κB Signaling Pathway by Weizheng Zhou, Jiang Hong, Ji Zhu, Xiaowei Wang

    Published 2019-01-01
“…The proliferation rate of Eca109 cells in each group was measured with the CCK8 assay, and the apoptosis rate in each group was analyzed by flow cytometry; the in vitro scratch assay was used to determine the migration ability of Eca109 cells after PSP treatment; the expression levels of IL-1, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, and TGF-β were measured by RT-PCR, and the expression levels of TLR4 and proteins that are related to NF-κB signaling pathways were determined by Western blot. Results. PSP significantly inhibited the proliferation of Eca109 cells (p<0.05) on a time- and dose-dependent manner; the apoptosis rates of Eca109 cells in experimental groups were significantly increased after 48 h of culture (p<0.05); PSP significantly reduced the migration and invasion ability of Eca109 cells (p<0.05); RT-PCR results showed that the expression of IL-10 in Eca109 cells increased significantly after treatment with PSP (p<0.05), while the expression of IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α, and TGF-β decreased significantly (p<0.05). …”
