Phylogenetic analysis and the spatial spread of arctic rabies virus in Chukotka
Published 2024-12-01“…Among them two different pools were identified which demonstrate maximum nucleotide sequence identity with the Arctic-3 isolates from Greenland, the Svalbard Archipelago and Northern Canada. At the same time, different genetic sub-lineages (Arctic-3 v/s Arctic-2 and Arctic-4) were detected in neighboring land areas on both sides of the Bering Sea. …”

Estimate of the Arctic Convective Boundary Layer Height from Lidar Observations: A Case Study
Published 2012-01-01“…A new automated small size lidar system (microlidar or MULID) has been developed and employed to perform aerosol measurements since March 2010 at Ny Ålesund (78.9°N, 11.9°E), Svalbard. The lidar observations have been used to estimate the PBL height by using the gradient method based on abrupt changes in the vertical aerosol profile and monitor its temporal evolution. …”

The Growth and Decay of Intense GNSS Amplitude and Phase Scintillation During Non‐Storm Conditions
Published 2024-12-01“…Measurements from the EISCAT radar in Svalbard (ESR) revealed the presence of dense plasma structures with significant gradients in regions of strong Joule heating/fast flows and soft precipitation when scintillation was enhanced. …”

Fate of trace elements and emerging environmental pollutants (benzotriazoles and benzothiazoles) from a glacier-fed river in the mixing zone of an Arctic fjord system
Published 2025-01-01“…The fate of organic and inorganic pollutants was studied in the Arctic, in the mixing zone of freshwater and seawater of a glacier-fed river and a fjord (Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard). Concentrations of trace elements and contaminants of emerging concern, benzotriazoles and benzothiazoles (BTRs and BTHs), were assessed. …”

Enhancing microbial predator–prey detection with network and trait-based analyses
Published 2025-02-01“…For this, we investigated algae and their protistan predators in biocrusts of three distinct polar regions, i.e., Svalbard, the Antarctic Peninsula, and Continental Antarctica. …”

Hiking Trails Facilitate the Spread of a Native High‐Arctic Species
Published 2025-01-01“…We investigated the role of human disturbance in facilitating the spread of a native plant (Papaver dahlianum) in a high‐Arctic natural environment close to Isfjord Radio station and along adjacent hiking trails at Kapp Linné, Svalbard. We reconstructed the spatial pattern of the arrival and spread of P. dahlianum at Kapp Linné by combining historical records of the species occurrence (1928–2018) with a contemporary survey of the plant abundance along the main hiking trail (2023 survey) and tested the relative effects of altitude and proximity to hiking trails on the species density via a generalised linear model (GLM). …”

Pathogenic potential of ornithogenic Escherichia coli strains detected in the Earth's polar regions
Published 2024-12-01“…The study used collections of E. coli isolated from ornithogenic biological material during expeditions to high latitude areas of the Arctic (archipelagos of Novaya Zemlya, Franz Josef Land, Svalbard) and Antarctic (Haswell Archipelago). 16 cultures associated with avian E. coli (12 polar and 4 temperate strains) were selected for genome-wide sequencing using BGI technology. …”

High-resolution 4D electrical resistivity tomography and below-ground point sensor monitoring of High Arctic deglaciated sediments capture zero-curtain effects, freeze–thaw transit...
Published 2025-01-01“…We installed two geoelectrical monitoring stations on the forefield of a retreating glacier in Svalbard, consisting of semi-permanent surface ERT arrays and co-located soil sensors, which track seasonal changes in soil electrical resistivity, moisture, and temperature in 3D. …”
