Comparative Ethics of Modern Payment Models
Published 2023-01-01“…One of the largest critiques of value-based payments has always been that value cannot simply be measured with empirical data but must account for patient values.[27] The solution to such a critique is patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), which factor patient values and lifestyle into the empirical payment calculation.[28] A study by Groeneveld et al. showed that PROMs were useful in evaluating the progression of stroke patients at several different time intervals.[29] Bernstein showed that PROMs give insight into the sociodemographic factors a patient may be experiencing, which can guide targeted interventions.[30] To providers, these may not sound like innovative clinical tools, but they resemble the everyday scoring systems and social work consultations seen in patient care. PROMs are an attempt to formally incorporate such items directly to payment. …”
