THE AXIS OF EVIL: THE ALLIANCE OF NEO-CONSERVATISM AND NEO-ORIENTALISM IN RUSHDIE’S SHALIMAR THE CLOWN / ŞEYTAN ÜÇGENİ: SALMAN RUSHDİE’NİN SOYTARI ŞALİMAR ROMANINDA AŞIRI SAĞCI NEO... by Beyazıt AKMAN

    Published 2016-12-01
“…<p>In this article, the Orientalist discourse in Salman Rushdie’s <em>Shalimar the Clown</em> (2005), one of the author’s most problematic Works and his first novel after 9/11, is analyzed. It is argued that rather than questioning the assumptions about the “<em>Islamic</em> terrorist” and its place in the Western collective conscious, Rushdie reinforces and licenses the intellectual neo-orientalist discourse of “the axis of evil” perpetuated by the Bush administration by applying the stereotypes and clichés about the East, without engaging in a dialogue to understand the Other or historicizing the subject matter. …”

Study on the Efficiency of Fenton-SBR System in the Treatment of Fine Chemical Wastewater by XU Weidong, WEI Dongyang, LI Jie, ZHANG Fakui, ZHOU Wen

    Published 2020-01-01
“…With characteristics of high pollutant concentration and difficult degradation, fine chemical wastewater is treated by Fenton-SBR system. In the test, response surface methodology is used to optimize Fenton pretreatment conditions to improve biodegradability. The effluent after Fenton pretreatment is introduced into SBR system for biochemical treatment, and sponge iron, volcanic rocks and polyurethane foam fillers are added into SBR system to improve treatment efficiency. The test results show that the optimal conditions for Fenton pretreatment of fine chemical wastewater by response surface methodology are as follows:initial pH is 4.10,H2O2 dosage is 9.11 mL/L,molar ratio of nH2O2 and nFe2+ is 12.31,reaction time is about 1 hour, and COD removal rate is 35.42%.The removal efficiency of COD,TN and TP by sponge iron SBR system can reach 31.83%,23.67% and 65.17% respectively.Kinetic analysis shows that the second-order kinetic equation can better reflect the degradation process of organic matter in SBR system.…”

Challenging “La Vie Bohème”: Community, Subculture, and Queer Temporality in Rent by Eleonora Sammartino

    Published 2017-02-01
“…This configuration of time contributes to the shaping of space as a subcultural place where the community is central, conceived as a utopian capitalist solution to the social problems represented in the musical, from the AIDS epidemic in the stage version, closely connected to the local context of the gentrification of the ethnically and socially diverse Alphabet City, to the more universalist solution to the post-9/11 trauma in 2005. The film could be then used as a springboard to critically reflect on the commodification of queer (sub)culture through a process that has brought Rent into the mainstream, in connection to the socio-cultural context of its production and reception.…”

Heat and Cold Shocks Decrease the Incidence of Diapause in <i>Trichogramma telengai</i> Larvae by Natalia D. Voinovich, Sergey Y. Reznik

    Published 2025-01-01
“…In particular, the peaks of the sensitivity to diapause-averting effects of heat and of cold shocks fell, correspondingly, on middle-stage (5 days of development at 15 °C) and late-stage (9–11 days of development at 15 °C) larvae. Heat shocks influence the incidence of diapause mostly via the changes in the initial proportions of diapause-destined and non-diapause-destined individuals, whereas the effect of cold shocks is mostly based on differential mortality (i.e., the difference in mortality among treatments of the same experiment) with better survival of non-diapause-destined individuals. …”
