description | With an estimated 1.27 million fatalities per year and the potential to undermine vital medical treatments, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious danger to world health. The Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS), which was created by the World Health Organization in 2015 to address this issue, standardized AMR monitoring globally. The application of GLASS throughout Africa, the Americas, and Asia is examined in this review, with a focus on how it has improved clinical treatment, strengthened national monitoring systems, and encouraged antibiotic stewardship. Through a standardized methodology, GLASS has strengthened global AMR responses by supporting robust infection prevention programs, optimizing antibiotic use, and improving laboratory capacities. From 2017 to 2020, GLASS facilitated a 15% increase in countries reporting AMR data, demonstrating its impact on global health management. However, low- and middle-income countries face challenges such as resource limitations and system integration, hindering full implementation.Despite these barriers, GLASS has advanced sustainable AMR surveillance by promoting data consistency and innovative approaches like digital tools and capacity-building programs. Continued efforts are essential to overcome challenges and ensure the long-term success of AMR monitoring systems globally. |
