description In the introduction to a conversation with Brook Andrew, the author recalls what is at stake in the residency programme that the Musée du quai Branly has been running since 2008. This programme, aimed at supporting projects and integrating new pieces into the museum’s photographic collection, has given rise to various works, some of which—like that of Brook Andrew—were developed in connection with the museum’s collection of historical photographs. The conversation enables a better understanding of Brook Andrew’s work as a whole. It contextualises the approach that led him to explore the question of access to photographic collections in 2016, and to develop the artist’s role as smuggler.
