| Summary: | <i>Heterotis niloticus</i> is a fascinating freshwater fish species popularly referred to as the African bonytongue. It offers great potential for aquaculture due to its rapid growth, flesh quality, adaptability to low oxygen environments, and high market value. Domestication efforts for this species have been initiated to optimize its production and meet the increasing global demand for sustainable protein sources. This review explores the current state of <i>H. niloticus</i> domestication and highlights the key challenges and opportunities.
