| Summary: | The relevance of the presented research is driven by the significant role of the mining industry in the economy of Zhytomyr region, which is a leading region in Ukraine in terms of natural decorative stone extraction volumes. The aim of this study is defined as a comprehensive analysis of development trends in extraction and export of natural stone, assessment of the industry’s economic impact on regional development, as well as identification of key challenges and elaboration of strategic measures to enhance its competitiveness.
Economic-statistical methods, comparative analysis, and structural analysis were employed during the study, enabling the determination of dynamics in stone extraction indicators, peculiarities of its export, and impacts on regional development. It was established that since 2014, there has been a reorientation of export flows from traditional eastern markets towards countries in Europe, Asia, and North America. The study identified a significant contribution of natural stone exports to the formation of the regional gross product (approximately 2 %), maintenance of thousands of jobs, and ensuring stable revenues to local budgets through rent payments.
The results of this study reveal that the industry faces several challenges, including environmental constraints, logistical difficulties, and intensifying international competition. The authors concluded that enhancing the competitiveness of Zhytomyr stone can be achieved through the development of processing capacities, modernization of extraction and processing technologies, intensification of marketing activities in promising markets, and creating favorable conditions for state support of the industry.
Further research prospects include detailing export diversification strategies, implementing environmentally-friendly technologies, and optimizing logistics routes, thereby increasing the industry’s resilience to global economic fluctuations and strengthening its economic impact on the region. |
