Delegation at his age of 42, has been changed by Democratic Party which has come to power in 1950.
Zorlu was related to Prime Minister Adnan Menderes by their wives and he has decided to enter politics
as result of the pressure put by his parents and environment. He has entered the Parliament after being
elected as a deputy of Gallipoli. He has been appointed as the deputy Prime Minister and Minister of
State in his first period and he was the most mentioned one, who has been expected to be the Minister of
Foreign Affairs as a replacement of Fuat Köprülü. Zorlu has been elected as a deputy of Gallipoli in the
1957 elections again and chosen as the Minister of Foreign Affairs by Menderes. Zorlu has undertaken
important works during this period and remained in power until the military coup of May 27th 1960.
Certainly, the London and Zurich agreements come first among them. Zorlu has been put on trial in
Yassıada with all other party members and sentenced to death. The execution of his sentence was carried
out on September 16th 1961. In this article, the entry of Fatin Rüştü Zorlu into the politics, his work as a
Minister of Foreign Affairs and his trial in Yassıada have been evaluated in consideration of the archival
documents, local and international media of the period and other sources. |
