Description
Summary:In this article, we analyze the reflections developed by the Pernambucan geographer Manuel Correia de Andrade, who positioned himself in the mid-twentieth century as an observer of the urban, social and economic problems caused by the post-war population explosion in the city of Recife. Our aim is to show that the sensitive perceptions formulated and presented by Manuel Correia de Andrade, far more than a one-off effort to understand and solve problems related to the socio-economic realities of the city of Recife, helped to deepen and institutionalize a certain reading of the Brazilian Nordeste. The analytical perspective adopted aims to understand this process as the product of a historicity that articulates intellectual and urban history, with the city of Recife at its center.
