| Summary: | The article is devoted to the famous Polovtsian statue, supposedly depicting a woman with a set of weapons. A brief history of the creation of the modern myth about the Polovtsian «Amazons» is covered. A scientific description of medieval sculpture from the Nikolaev Local History Museum is given. It was concluded that the statue represents the figure of a Polovtsian male warrior, to which in modern times a fake female bust was attached. Evidence of the erroneous interpretation of S.A. Pletneva is presented of this statue and the inconsistency of the researcher’s hypothesis about the existence of the institution of Amazonism among the Polovtsians. The issue of ethics and responsibility in the process of scientific research is raised. It is noted that any new hypothesis or concept, even put forward by the most venerable scientists, must be carefully studied and tested, otherwise science can turn into myth-making. |
