Description
Summary:Tortistilus wickhami is widely distributed across North America. Previously reported from Canada to South California, it is now documented for the first time in the vineyards of Valle de Guadalupe, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. This treehopper is of economic significance, as it is a suspected candidate for the transmission of grapevine red blotch virus, raising concerns about its potential role in the spread of plant pathogens and its impact on grapevine health and production. Specimens of T. wickhami were collected between May and July 2023 on grapevines (Vitis vinifera) cv. Cabernet Sauvignon across four sites in “Valle de Guadalupe” vineyards and identified with morphological criteria and DNA barcoding. This is the first record of this species in the region, as well as in Mexico, expanding its known distribution southward to the Baja California Peninsula.
