| description | The aim of this study is to examine the ways in which women’s activities contribute to the realization of the “urban dream” and promote their social integration by analyzing empirical data from interviews with young women. Qualitative research methods were used to examine the experience of café-hopping and the feminization of the city. 35 participants were selected through purposive sampling and a criterion sampling strategy. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data, and thematic analysis was used to analyze the data from the phenomenological interviews. The findings are categorized into four major themes: public scene, collective performance and personal identity (spatial needs), the experience of new femininity in space and the formation of feminine truth (the opportunity to be present and reduce challenges), the construction of women’s social space through corporeality, and the change from a threat-oriented to an opportunistic perspective. According to the findings, physical activities exert their influence and facilitate the social integration of young women in cities through four dimensions: “space”, “network”, “identity” and “image”. Attending cafes expands the scale of women’s living spaces and helps them build social networks and self-identify. It also strengthens women’s individualistic values as opposed to family-oriented values. These new values allow them to enjoy leisure life and change the stereotypical image of rural-urban women. |
