Summary:The familiarity of Sorolla's painting is not only the result of the subjects he represents and their universality, nor of the faithfulness to reality, which is often attributed to this virtuoso painter. It also stems from the use of particular techniques too often hastily characterized as "photographic". The importance that Sorolla attaches to the question of framing brings into play a real thought about the observer and his sometimes paradoxal relationship to the painting.
