Description
Summary:This article is based on an ethnographic survey carried out in a palliative care unit. It looks at how caregivers engage in inquiries to hear, recognize and treat their patients’ pain. The problem is made all the more delicate by the fact that it’s not just a question of knowing how to relieve patients of their pain, but of determining for them what that pain is. These patients are often unable to express their pain in the first person. Moreover, the boundary between life and death is so fine that treating pain can either speed up the end of life or prolong it. By using the narrative form, the article places itself in the trouble zone where things get done. It takes account of the ambivalences that run through these situations, without seeking to resolve them.
