Description
Summary:Through an overview of law training in British India and French Indochina, this paper offers some insights into the specificities of legal instruction in a colonial setting. Depending on the territory, a wide variety of institutions and syllabi were implemented in a more or less progressive manner. Thus, differences emerged which highlights the hybrid nature of legal training which combined both metropolitan transplants and colonial practices. Such a system relied on intellectual movement, including that of students, some of whom were willing to complete their curricula by enrolling in extra-colonial schools. The fact that some colonial institutions displayed regional ambitions further emphasizes the need for an open and global study of legal training in French and British Asia.
