Description
Summary:This article explores the socio-environmental transformations of the Goro Lagoon in the Po River Delta by looking into the politics of time that have been developed to preserve the monocultural industry of the Manila Clam. Taking cue from extensive fieldwork in the communities of Goro and Gorino, the analysis focuses on the conflict between the multiple temporalities of environmental change and the cultural expectations of techno-scientific controllability deployed over the lagoon industry. Furthermore, it shows the vulnerabilities of a monofocalised extractive model which neglects the wider ecological phenomena taking place in the lagoon. By examining recent macroalgal blooms and alien species proliferations, the article investigates the chronopolitics that have shaped both the local ecology and landscape. Finally, it offers a critical reflection on the multispecies relationality and its reconfigurations in a time of accelerated climate crisis.
