| Summary: | We analyze here Ben Younger's film Boiler Room (2000) : a mainstream financial thriller. The movie illustrates observations made in sociology of financial markets and sociology of white-collar crime... It tells the story of a brokerage agency that works in the over-the-counter market. The agency practices hard selling to average Americans who save for their children's education, their retirement... The brokers keep clients under the illusion that they have interest in placing their holdings in unknown companies that could pay off like the lottery. Manipulating stock prices, the agency creates a demand for securities providing false information and ruins savers. The film’s director suggests that practices in the over-the-counter market are not the opposite of regulated finance, but rather an extension of criminal practices that takes place on the official markets. |
