| Summary: | Shared reading of picture books within families, involving children enrolled in preschool, reveals the development of differing dispositions that contribute to social inequalities in school achievement particularly when schools rely on familial socializations. These variations are not solely dependent on parents’ cultural habits but also on the material conditions in which children are raised. Families’ financial and housing situations constrain their budgets, which in turn affects the size of their home libraries and their access to books. This influences the types of picture books available and the ways in which reading is practiced, shaping diverse instruments of socialization. Furthermore, reading socializations are better understood when placed within the broader context of family lineage and its relationship to school, considering the trajectories of parents and grandparents. These findings are made possible by revisiting research choices central to the work of Georges Liénard and Émile Servais. |
