Summary: | The great majority of studies conducted on the sound quality of urban parks and gardens characterise it in very general terms, irrespective of the sound sources. These studies distinguish parks and gardens according to the dominant categories of sound sources (natural, human and urban) and the value judgements associated with these. The judgement values regarding the sound presence of human beings in gardens can be positive in certain instances and negative in others, and little is known about the perceptive phenomena which accompany it. This article presents the specific exploration of the sound of human presence which stems from the sonorous action of the users of the garden, the way they co-produce the sound environment according to the affordances and permissivities relating to the landscape structures. The fundamentals of human sound presence in gardens are analysed in terms of the interactions between built spaces, perceptive modalities and actions. Intended for landscape architects, this article presents the role of spatial structures in the emergence of soundscapes. |
