description | Introduction: diabetes is a chronic disease that requires comprehensive and multidisciplinary care for its effective management. Successful diabetes management depends on the active participation of the patient, the family and the health care team.
Objective: to conduct a narrative review to identify the evolution of diabetes care management in the adult population in comparison with that of Peru.
Methods: a comprehensive search of scientific articles published since 2018 was conducted in various databases such as PubMed, ProQuest, Scielo, Scopus, ScienceDirect and Dialnet and other professional websites. Eligibility criteria were applied and 10 relevant articles were selected for the narrative review.
Conclusions: The comparative review identified weaknesses in the health management of the adult population with diabetes in Peru, where specialized health professionals are mostly concentrated in the capital city. Differences were also found in obtaining adequate, regular and timely medication, in the availability of insulin and medical supplies, and in the daily control of blood glucose. Consequently, the importance of strengthening management and organizational capacity in the health system to improve diabetes care in the adult population is highlighted. |
