Summary:In this editorial, we explore the reasons why researchers include questions related to ecological and social sustainability in their research. First, we identify, through a field survey, various difficulties inherent to this type of research (predominance of weak sustainability approaches, risk of “embarking” on the topic). Next, we show how the sense of usefulness and collective aspect of the research is both a response to these difficulties and a powerful driving force to progress in our research.
