| description | This text examines certain questions relating to the theme of metropolitan cosmopolitanism, focusing on trajectories and subjectivities. Through an examination of classic authors like Simmel, it considers the discontinuities between objective and subjective cultures in modern-contemporary society. One of its central aims is to identify the circulation between multiple fields and different currents of cultural tradition. This article builds upon earlier work in which sociocultural complexity and heterogeneity were examined from the perspective of their effects on the trajectories of individuals and categories. This article reconsiders the notion of cosmopolitanism by contextualising it historical and cultural terms. Also considered is the theme of mediation, which is manifested not only in the ability to transit, but also—in certain situations—through the role of mediator between different groups, networks and codes. Mediators, though not authors in the conventional sense, are interpreters and re-inventors of culture. They are agents of change when they carry information and transmit new principles, habits, goods and aspirations. |
