| Summary: | EVOLUTION OF THE THREE SEAS INITIATIVE IN THE CONTEXT OF CONTEMPORARY REGIONAL SECURITY CHALLENGES, GEOPOLITICS AND THE CONFLICT IN UKRAINE
The Three Seas Initiative is a platform for regional cooperation that has been in place since 2016. Despite its short history, it has already gone through several stages of development, from novelty, shaping of its identity, stagnation and revival, related to events such as the creation of its Investment Fund, the implementation of the first projects, the pandemic, Russia’s attack on Ukraine, or the expansion to include a new country, Greece, among others. External events have affected the Initiative and forced certain actions related to adapting to the changing international security environment. In contrast, the Initiative’s internal decisions, related to its own objectives and the directions of its own development, were aimed at expanding the range of instruments for influencing states and the security environment, strengthening the entity on the international stage and marking its sphere of influence. In addition to the Initiative’s constituent states, states such as the US, China and Ukraine have influenced its evolution. The aim of the article is to present the Initiative’s evolution and relevance to regional security, geopolitics and the war in Ukraine.
