Summary: | The Tana River Delta in Kenya is a disputed area where farmers and pastoralists, supporters of large-scale irrigation and wetland conservation advocates confront each other while the many management plans (and associated maps) produced by various government services and NGOs are contradictory. This paper discusses the pitfalls and even the risky nature of the use of participatory mapping when applied to a territory characterized by such tensions. The adequacy of the participatory mapping approach to an understanding of territorial dynamics in the complex and multi-use space of a delta is questioned and alternative tools and approaches are considered. |
