description | On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the abolition of apartheid in South Africa, which was won through a fierce struggle on June 30, 1991, it is interesting to look at the career of Nelson Mandela (1918-2013), and the strong political committments which guided him throughout his extraordinary life and which helped him to keep hope throughout his 27 years in prison (August 1962 - February 11, 1990). How do his humanist and egalitarian convictions come close to communist ideas? How does he position himself in relation to communism in his autobiography A Long Walk to Freedom and in his pleadings during his trial? Why has he always maintained an ambiguity about his belonging to communism? The analysis of his words, his actions and his autobiographical account allows us to provide some answers to these important questions. |
