description | Based on the analysis of two biographies of Kobori Enshū, famous landscaper from the early 17th century, one offers to think over the writing of the history of Japanese gardens of the 20th century. At first sight, everything seems to oppose the two main historians of the post-war Japanese gardens : Shigemori Mirei and Mori Osamu. The former was an autodidact, a visionary and an inspired artist, while the latter was a scholar who based his works on manuscripts, excavations and research. If their interpretations differ on Kobori Enshū’s works, one shall see in this article that both of them take over the life and work of this exceptional character in order to revisit them in his own personal way. An interesting detail : this difference seems to be found in their works as landscapers. Thus, the reading of the history of Japanese gardens is paramount in order to understand the evolution of gardens nowadays. |
