| Summary: | Slaves are scarcely mentioned in the yet very rich epigraphic documentation about Arles. This statement further enhances the value of several fragmentary lists of slaves found in the Trinquetaille neighbourhood. Although discovered in the 1960s and 1970s, these inscriptions had not yet been studied in detail. They refer to people who served as ministri to the Lares in the 1st c. BC, probably between the Triumvirate and the beginning of the Christian era. This paper addresses two intersecting issues: One deals with 1st c. BC trading groups’ forms of organisation, the other one with the role of the cult of the Lares in the supervision of the working classes under Augustan rule. |
