Summary: | This paper explores the short-term relationship between the levels of air pollution and safety incidents in Medellín, Colombia, between 2017 and 2019. The data for this paper come from public sources from Medellín. While policymakers are grappling with the cost of these policies, in the middle of an air quality crisis, the city of Medellín has been implementing measures to clean up the air; this paper seeks to inform that process by outlying the public safety implications of better air quality. We find a positive relationship between PM2.5 and daily incidents, where a 10% increase in PM2.5 is associated with a 0.21% increase in incidents per day, and this relationship holds for different categories, such as property and violent incidents. Both safety and environmental concerns are key issues in the policy-agenda in Latin America, and so the findings become a key contribution to research and a valuable tool for cost–benefit analysis of environmental policy. |
