| description | Between 1550 and 1559, Ramusio’s Navigationi et viaggi was published in Venice, a collection of travel accounts and geographical writings. The result of a considerable process of compilation, it offered an up-to-date image of the œcumene. It questioned the modalities by which the world was represented: unlike the travelers, the man who gathered the texts had no itinerary to guide him while composing the volumes. Through the decisions he made, a singular way of depicting places emerged. The selection and sequence of the texts turned places into political spaces defined by their subjection to the rule of European powers. Studying the relationship between spaces and places in the Navigationi sheds light on the main tenets of the compilation itself. It also points to its fundamental ambiguity: in his picture of the world, Ramusio ascribes centrality to the Republic of Venice –which is the place he writes from– while occasionally veering away from it through the use of a double discourse, both scientific and political. |
