Description
Summary:Background: The suicide rate, burden, morbidity, and mortality in Nigeria are alarming. However, until recently, there was no suicide prevention policy in the country. Context: This study aimed to describe the opinions of attorneys in Nigeria, toward developing a suicide prevention strategy on a national level. In addition, it briefly reviewed the newly launched National Suicide Prevention Strategic Framework (NSPSF). Materials and Methods: It is a mixture of two methods. The first was a cross-sectional survey conducted among attorneys in Benin City who were recruited by convenience sampling. Participants filled out a paper questionnaire consisting of a sociodemographic section, and relevant questions on opinions about developing a national suicide prevention policy. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in tables. The second method adopted was to review the NSPSF document. Results: Out of 87 attorneys, most supported positively all the items identified as strategies for national suicide prevention. On the other hand, the NSPSF was found to be comprehensive, clear, and coherent in its objectives. Conclusion: The majority opined favorably toward developing a national suicide prevention strategy. Implementing the NSPSF will require strong political will and commitment of the government, ring-fenced funding, alleviation of unemployment/poverty, and regular monitoring/evaluation of performance.
