description | Working for a research into war correpondents during the first carlist war, this article is based on the analysis of the spanish news presented in the newspaper Le Phare de Bayonne in 1838, and the same news dealt by his rival, La Sentinelle des Pyrénées mainly during the last quarter of the year 1838. The author undertakes a comparative analysis of the news enlarged by these newspapers upon two sensational events linked to the first carlist war. On one hand, coming secretely from Austria, the arrival of the princess of Beira in the basque provinces and her wedding with the pretender Don Carlos of Borbon (Charles V of Spain). On the other hand, the increase in the massacres of captives on each side, and the reprisals, justified by military proclamations and published letters. Despite the Elliot Convention signed in 1835, these violations of human rights where supported by the context of violence in popular circles, wether liberals or carlists. The author emphasizes the role of press editors and he shows how the ideological opposition between the two newspapers leads them to privilege different news and practice two distinct kinds of journalism. |
