Description
Summary:Graduated in mathematics, in France, Manuela Carneiro da Cunha approached anthropology at the end of the 1960s, when attending seminars at the Laboratoire d’anthropologie sociale, directed by Lévi-Strauss. Back in Brazil, she joined the University of Campinas, where, based on research with the Krahó, a Jê-speaking indigenous group, she obtained her doctorate, subsequently becoming a professor at the same institution. From then on, her contributions to the discipline expanded and covered discussions ranging from eschatology to identity, ethnicity, indigenous history, and legislation, territorial and intellectual rights, and traditional knowledge, among others. Here we seek to give an account of her itinerary, highlighting her theoretical-ethnographic contributions and her activism throughout her 50 years long career.
