Description
Summary:This article is a study of the forms, aims and organizational modes of mobilization of people living in the peripheral area of southern Casablanca in the 1990s. A fragmented site of substandard housing territories that recently formed in the city, this peripheral area is home to a dense socially relegated population, deprived of influence or means of communication with the centers of metropolitan authorities, who developed their own urban integration skills. The social mobilizations are split into two evolutionary categories, which are part of the same conflict register, and adapt according to the degree of openness or restraint of local and central policies, but also depending on mobilizing issues. This scenario shows that social spaces subject to deregulation and violence, usually perceived as microcosms unable to bring back new socio-political orders, develop urban integration strategies and acquire powers to change, therefore reconfigure the metropolitan area.
