description | A miniature altar has been discovered in a building filling, belonging to a rural settlement in Bétheny, north of the ancient city of Reims/Durocortorum. The discovery context prevents us from identifying the status of this cult place dedicated to Dagiata or Agiata (a domestic temple or a place dedicated to the local genius loci ?), but the engraved inscription on the altar allows us to add a new deity in the Remorum pantheon. The breaks in the altar stone create some problems for the reading of the inscription : part of lines 2 and 3 are unreadable, as well as the end of the text on the back side. However it is still possible to identify this object as an altar offered to the local goddess Dagiata or Agiata, to fulfill a vow. |
