| description | This abstract questions in a historical perspective the way cultural landscapes of the Béziers area called the ‘‘Biterrois" have been viewed from the 17th century up to now so as to highlight how they have been perceived and enhanced. The awareness of ancient landscapes in the Biterrois emerged in the 1620s. Because of religious conflicts, Roman landscapes were seen as “pax romana.” Throughout the 18th and the 19th century, ancient landscapes fell into oblivion. During that time, what was perceived in the Biterrois landscapes was more related to the picturesque and gothic than to antiquity. But today the fossilization of Roman cadastral surveys highlights how ancient agrarian and urban structures have imprinted the landscapes. How can such affects be pictured? |
