Description
Summary:This article will explore the musical environment in Algiers in the inter-war period, focusing more specifically on the relationships between societies of indigenous music and the French musical milieu. Shedding light on the Young-Algerian spirit of these societies’ leaders and their aspirations to social and political integration, the article aims at showing how this context was ripe for the rise of syncretic musical forms and practices, for which the category usually applied – “Andalusian music” – is insufficient.
