Summary: | Changes in social expectations concerning the living environment have led French legislators working on normal landscape policies, such as the 1993 landscape law, to introduce landscape issues into the domain of urban regulations. Such changes, also apparent since 2000 in the European Landscape Convention, raise the question of how to characterise periurban landscapes or the urban landscapes developed during the 20th century with a view to assessing landscape policies. Concerning these issues, we here develop the idea of landscape characterisation based on surrounding regions. Our concepts are anchored more in social practices and the study of territorial appropriation than in seeking the origins of ever-present cultural models. This approach consists mainly of overcoming legibility and assessment difficulties linked to peri-urban residential areas. The experiment was run on a rather characteristic peri-urban municipality of Ile de France: Plaisir. The inhabitants’ everyday practices – especially those carried out on foot – give meanings and values to places while displaying processes of place appropriation and attachment. Such practices make it possible to speak of the configuration of an ordinary landscape as an element inherent to forming an identity and a feeling of belonging to the territory. |
