Description
Summary:This paper analyses the impact of modern heritage conservation policies on traditional frameworks for preserving Buddhist monasteries in Thailand and Sri Lanka by investigating the shift of practice and approaches in conservation. By superposing modern heritage values onto the social and spiritual values people maintain toward Buddhist monasteries, particular lines of thought and practice have emerged that adapt international conservation guidelines to localized contexts and identities, presented here as an ongoing epistemological shift.
