| Summary: | Witsixuki: food desire, illness and death among the Wauja of Southeastern Amazonia. This article is a Wauja ethnography of illness as an ontological mode of the transformation of sick humans into « bicho » (animal/spirit). I describe how unsatisfied desire for food, alterated bodily states, extreme pain, senses, dreams, visions and substances alien to the human body interconnect to create an empirical field for the Wauja concept of animal transformation. The ontological plan of transformations is not limited to the pathological conditions of the affected individuals, but it extends to all existing beings and things. |
