| description | As the wave of indignation caused by decades of neoliberal and corporatist policies gathers around Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s project of reform in 2018, the measures put in place by the new Mexican president are rapidly breaking his post-neoliberal promise. Indeed, the imposition of republican austerity, the operational centralisation of the public apparatus and the negation of civil society organisations, on which the new government is based, all justified by the struggle against corruption, greatly reduce its transformative scope. Starting from a socioeconomic approach articulating different scales of analysis, this article offers a critical look at the principle features of this political project through the study of one of its flagship public program: Sembrando Vida. In spite of an innovative agroecological approach, we show that this program falls into a reductive and homogenizing vision of territories and communities by refusing to acknowledge the primary role of reciprocity, horizontal solidarity and pre-existing collective dynamics, just like López Obrador’s overall policy, both of which then fail to emerge from a sterile opposition between the State and the Market. |
