Summary:The question of the operation of the Hartmann–Sprenger tube is considered. The influence of the parameters of the incident gas flow on its parameters at the end of the dead-end cavity is investigated. The mechanism of energy transfer from the incoming flow to the flow entering the dead-end cavity has been determined. The proof of the influence of viscosity and shear stresses on the occurrence of transfer of kinetic energy from the incident flow to the flow entering the dead-end cavity is given. The influence of the exchange of work and heat on the mechanism of energy transfer in the dead-end cavity of the Hartmann– Sprenger tube is revealed.
