Description
Summary:In 2008 and 2012, a cemetery in use from the late 8th century to the mid-11th century was partially excavated on the Ferme du Pouy site at Mortefontaine. A rural settlement of the same period was located on either side of the funerary area. To the north and south, a ditch marked the separation between the two sectors. A building corresponding to a possible place of worship was identified at the heart of the funerary area which is noteworthy for a high burial-density generating numerous re-cuttings and reduced and secondary graves. Organisation by rows was discernible nonetheless and a few grave-markers found. Highly diverse funerary practices can be seen from the shape and lay-out of the graves, the use of a shroud, the presence of clothing, and the body’s position. A burial group of higher social status could possibly correspond to managers of an estate belonging to the abbey of Saint-Denis, well-established on the Soissons plateau.
